Inclusivity, Diversity & Safeguarding at The Charcoal Hut
A safe place to breathe, belong, and be yourself.
At The Charcoal Hut, inclusivity isn’t an add-on. It’s at the heart of everything we do.
We created this space to be more than a place to stay – it’s a space to rest, to reconnect, and to feel safe. We know that true rest only comes when you feel you’re welcome exactly as you are. And so, every part of how we host, from the forest floor to the top of the trees, is rooted in respect, dignity, and care for everyone who arrives here.
Whether you come to us for solitude, romance, healing, or adventure – whether you’re arriving on a motorbike or walking up the lane with your boots muddy – you are welcome here.
Our Policies
Our Inclusion & Diversity Commitment
We proudly and actively welcome guests of all backgrounds, identities, and life experiences. This is a space for all.
That means:
-
You don’t need to “fit in” to belong here.
-
You don’t need to explain your identity to be respected.
-
You don’t need to ask if it’s okay to be yourself. It is.
We are a Certified LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Stay, and this is something we take seriously. We understand that not every space feels safe for everyone – which is why we’ve taken the time to learn, to listen, and to make sure our space doesn’t just say it’s inclusive, but actively is.
We don’t tolerate discrimination of any kind – whether on the basis of race, gender identity, sexuality, age, ability, body size, nationality, or any other aspect of who you are. You are not just accepted here – you are welcomed.
We regularly review our policies and practices to ensure we are not only upholding inclusion but also deepening it – with humility, education, and openness.
Neurodivergent and Disability-Aware Hosting
We understand that everyone arrives with different needs – and that’s okay. The Charcoal Hut is a place where you can go at your own pace.
We invite guests to tell us in advance if there’s anything we can do to make your stay easier or more comfortable – whether that’s supporting access, adapting communication styles, or helping to create a sensory-friendly environment. We will always do our very best to accommodate and respect those needs.
Our woodland setting is rustic by nature, and although the hut is in a secluded spot with uneven ground, we’re happy to chat with guests about the layout and landscape before arrival to ensure it feels right for them.
Safeguarding Statement
Creating safety, in every sense of the word.
As a private stay on family-owned land, we see safeguarding as a shared responsibility – one based on trust, respect, and proactive care.
We commit to:
-
Providing a safe, supportive environment where every guest feels physically, emotionally, and socially safe.
-
Being available and present if you need support or feel uncomfortable in any way during your stay.
-
Respecting your privacy and boundaries at all times – while remaining accessible should you want guidance, help, or connection.
We do not host large group bookings, parties, or disruptive events. This is a peaceful retreat space, and we maintain a calm and respectful environment for everyone’s comfort and wellbeing.
We take seriously any concerns about safety or conduct. If you ever feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or have any concerns before or during your stay, you can reach us directly and discreetly. We will act swiftly and supportively.
A Final Word on Welcome
Our hope is that when you step into The Charcoal Hut, you feel it: the sense that you can exhale, let your guard down, and just be.
You don’t have to pretend here. You don’t have to navigate complicated social spaces or worry about being misunderstood.
You can bring your full self, or you can bring your tired self. Either way, there will be a warm light on the deck, a bubbling stream nearby, and people who see you, just as you are.
This is your place, too.
Always.
